While working as a global events manager, Ricki Lawal would often travel with a candle as a staple suitcase item, to remember the smells of home even when she was far away. This year, she launched Selfmade Candles, which sells natural, vegan-friendly soy candles, hand-poured in London. Scents include eucalyptus, vanilla and lavender, and sage and rosemary, and each candle comes in a reusable glass jar with a label containing plant seeds — so you can use the jar afterwards to plant the label and watch the seeds grow. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests that have followed, Selfmade Candles are now offering a limited edition ‘Conscious’ candle, with 100 percent of proceeds going to Stand Up to Racism.
